The University of Toronto and pianist Keith Kirchoff announce the launch of a Composition Competition. All composers are invited to submit works between 5-10 minutes in length for piano and live electronics. Two works will be selected, one of which will be from a student currently enrolled (as of September 2010) at the University of Toronto. Both winning compositions will be featured in the 2011 New Music Festival at the University of Toronto in January 2011. Additionally, one of the two winning compositions will be recorded by Mr. Kirchoff and commercially released on his independent record label.
GUIDELINES
All composers are welcome to apply. The work must be for piano and live electronics; solo piano works or works written exclusively for fixed electronic media will not be accepted. All pieces should use the equipment/software supplied by Mr. Kirchoff (see below).
The piece must have been written within the last two years. It may have been performed previously, though it may not have previously been commercially released upon any record label.
All submissions must be received by September 1, 2010
The winners will be contacted no later than October 1, 2010. Both winning composers must be present at the performance.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
1) Scores – please email PDF files to keithkirchoff@gmail.com. The work must be for solo piano and live electronics using sssssthe equipment listed above.
2) Electronics – the electronic component may be sent in one of three ways:

3) Recordings – recordings are not required but are encouraged. MIDI recordings are acceptable. Please email MP3 files to sssssthe email address listed above.
4) Application – Include your name, address, phone number, email address, and website in the body of the email. Please ssssssssssindicate if the submitted piece has previously been performed. Also include a short bio and list of works as a PDF file.
5) Entry Fee – $15 for each submission (no limit on the number of submissions). Payments accepted through PayPal paid to ssssskeithkirchoff@gmail.com are preferred, but checks will be accepted and should be made out to “Keith Kirchoff” and sssssmailed to Keith Kirchoff, Commissioning Competition, 5057 Borland Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90032, USA. This fee is ssssswaived for students at the University of Toronto.
THE FINE PRINT
Submissions not meeting the requirements or the deadline will not be considered. Keith Kirchoff reserves the right to select multiple winners or decline to make a selection. Results will be posted at www.keithkirchoff.com and www.music.utoronto.ca and the winners will be contacted by email. If the selected piece requires equipment or software that is not included on the list above, the composer must provide the additional equipment and/or software free of charge to Mr. Kirchoff by November 1st, 2010. The applicant agrees that Keith Kirchoff has exclusive rights to the first commercial recording of the winning piece.
